Reduced Spaces addressed alienation, fear and claustrophobia experienced by women in urban society and their struggle to deal with it. In the films, by creating and framing, I literally fragmented and distorted the bodies and the spaces to articulate the metaphorical spaces in my enquiry of the specific gender subjectivity. I used sound, light and shade, close ups of body parts, claustrophobic structures, and repeated action to add to the experience of struggle and claustrophobia.
The walk in sculpture was made of Bamboos and gunny material to create a field of obstruction for the viewer to move in freely. As the viewer walked through the sculpture, the viewer was invited to experience the claustrophobia, which the protagonist in the film is also experiencing.
The dance performance was evolved through tai-chi exercises. Tai chi is about collecting energy from the body, cosmos, and earth. The performance communicated simultaneous repression and explosion of energy within the restricted space.
